I clearly remember the first time someone I knew got laid off. It was a sickening feeling, somewhere between “I can’t believe what’s happening” and “how did I manage to dodge that bullet?”
Twenty years later, it hasn’t gotten any easier. But if you work in tech or certain other industries, it would be shocking if you don’t know anyone who has gotten laid off. It
comes in cyclical waves, and the last couple of years have been especially brutal.
For those of us in tech, that sense of unease comes and goes with each wave, lingering in the background even when the tsunami hasn’t hit your company yet. We know when layoffs are happening in the industry, even if it hasn’t touched us directly—yet.
But you don’t have to accept the end of your role at your company as the end of your career journey. I wrote this guide, with input and perspectives from many people, to help you navigate these rough seas. I hope you find it helpful along the way.
